Well Being Challenge

Is the thought of walking one hour every day of the year too daunting? Can’t imagine life without a single dessert or French fry? Without a doubt, making changes in your diet or your daily routine can seem intimidating. However, by starting with small changes for a short period of time, you may realize that altering your habits is easier than you thought. Continued long-term, this “behavior change” can be habit-forming.

The goal of the Well Being Challenge is to help you make small, incremental changes that add up to big results. Each month we suggest a minor lifestyle modification (primarily diet- or exercise-related) and challenge you to make that change for the next 30 days. We’re asking you to try-on a new habit and see if it works for you. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is good health.

June’s challenge:

Cook Low-Sodium Meals from Scratch

Sodium is lurking in many packaged and processed foods, usually in the form of salt used as a preservative. Taking time to cook meals from scratch is a great way to control the level of sodium in your diet, and allows you to make creative use of herbs and spices to creative delicious low-sodium dishes of your own.

For this month’s Well Being Challenge, we challenge you to cook a low-sodium meal at home at least twice per week. Avoid packaged foods and use whole ingredients, and make creative use of herbs and spices to add flavor instead of salt.

To get you started, here are some delicious and flavorful recipes for low-sodium dishes. This challenge is also a great opportunity to exercise your creativity, so feel free to try other dishes and experiment with new ways to add flavor.

If you’d like extra help controlling your sodium intake, use the Well Being Journal to track your daily diet. The Journal will help you identify opportunities for improvement by highlighting your dietary and physical activity habits. After completing your journal for a full week, you can submit it for a personal consultation with a Bon Appétit registered dietitian.
